Spicy Thai Green Papaya Salad

Som Tam, or better known as Thai Green Papaya Salad, is probably one of the most iconic Thai dishes, but can rarely be found in restaurants outside of Thailand. Once you visit Thailand and bite into this Thai delicacy then Papaya salad will soon be sure to become your favourite takeout. In Thailand green papaya salad is made with a giant mortar and pestle. It is a Northeastern food that is eaten with sticky rice and other Northeastern dishes such as laab, beef salad and bamboo shoot salad.

Once you’ve taken a bite out of this, it’s difficult to not keep coming back for more.  

It’s an extremely appetizing dish which also packs in a lot of nutrition. There are various versions of green papaya salad and the two most popular types have either dried shrimp or salted crab. Green papaya salad with dried shrimp and peanuts is called som tum thai while the green papaya salad with salted crab is called som tum pbooh. This dish is generally served with sticky rice and a sliver of cabbage, green beans and Thai basil.
